Others may feel that not identifying as an alcoholic is a form of denial. It’s been 13 years since I’ve had a drink of alcohol. When I came to the horrible realization that I was going to have to quit drinking, I thought my life was over.
Inability to stop drinking

In Ireland, where a woman remembered, “Often came the nights I would measure my length in the road.” I heard many, many stories from “functioning alcoholics.” I guess I was one myself. I worked every day while I was drinking, and my reviews weren’t half bad. There are various treatment options for alcoholism. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for alcohol use disorder (AUD). A certain addiction treatment program may work for someone but may not necessarily work for another person.
Experiencing withdrawal
Shedding the label freed her from explaining who she was and was not, everywhere she went. I say I am a member of Alcoholics Anonymous because I believe there is an important difference between being an alcoholic and being a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Much of that time was spent trying to get out while being pulled back in by the shame and stigma. Sometimes – quite often, really – the stigma is perpetuated from within the walls intended for healing. I held onto the fact that I had never gotten a DUI as proof that I was not an alcoholic. DUI’s were common amongst the people I was hanging out with and since I didn’t have a single one—I thought I was doing pretty well. Like every other piece of proof I had, I lost that one too.
People who misuse alcohol lie about or hide their drinking in an attempt to downplay the issue. As much a story of the struggle as it is one of hope, this sensitive and resonant film takes us straight into the heart of one of society’s most prevalent and misunderstood addictions. In fact, it could not be farther from who I truly am. I am only now beginning to unpack the traumatic impact on my loved ones and me that resulted from the experiences that stemmed from alcoholism. Namely, all of the physical, mental and emotional damage caused by the effect that alcohol had on my brain and behaviour.
I imagined it to be a group of really sad old men telling sad stories in a grey room that smelled musty. I must have looked terrified because someone asked me if it was my first meeting. He took me to a table where some women were sitting and introduced me to them. Whether this resonates or aggravates, it’s my truth.
thoughts on “When at a A.A. meeting, how do you introduce yourself?”
- Withdrawal symptoms can quickly go from a bad hangover to a serious medical…
- So, in some sense, being “in recovery” is always a life-long reality.
- Talk today, personal identification became necessary.
- People who drink daily or almost every day should not be left alone for the first few days after stopping alcohol.
- “My name is Damien, and I’m an alcoholic.” This is the conventional way to introduce oneself at a meeting of the fellowship.
Not only did God forgive me for the things I had done, but he used all of my mess to bring me close to him. Without alcoholism, I don’t know if I would have ever tried to pray or ask him for forgiveness. I don’t know why or when I became an alcoholic, but at 28 years old I had the terrible realization that I was one. Alcohol tolerance is the ability to drink more than one used to in order to get drunk.
Research studies have shown that a third of people being treated for alcohol use disorders exhibited no symptoms after a year of treatment. Many others reportedly reduced their alcohol consumption and had fewer problems related to alcohol. Drunk driving, drinking before or while at work, or drinking against doctor’s orders are clear indications of alcoholism. These kinds of reckless behaviors indicate that alcohol has taken top priority and almost always has serious consequences.
I was good for about a pack to a pack and a half a day (depending on whether I was drinking that day or not). I don’t identify myself as a smoker today because I don’t smoke. For years, before I actually committed to permanent sobriety, I despised the word, “alcoholic.” I thought it was the dirtiest, most disgusting, shameful word. Having to identify with it in order to confess out loud that I have a drinking problem was too much to handle. Over the next year, those meetings would change my life. I would learn about alcoholism and I would find freedom from it.
